Dementia Care FAQs
We are able to care for all types of dementia, including Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, and Frontotemporal Dementia among the other types.
However, as we are not a nursing home, therefore, can not provide the medical care that those in the advanced stages of dementia might need.
Our staff are part of an annual training scheme which thoroughly covers caring for someone living with dementia. They are trained to connect with residents living with dementia using a variety of communication techniques.
Training is at the heart of the care we provide, so you can be confident that our staff have the knowledge and skills to provide compassion and the right level of care for your loved one with dementia.
Activities are a big part of the lifestyle at Old Alresford Cottage, and we encourage every resident to join in, even those living with dementia.
We adapt all our activities to those with dementia so they can join in whatever is on that day.
Typical activities can include:
- Day trips out
- Music & sing-a-longs
- Exercise sessions
- Crafts
- Animal therapy
- Pampering sessions
- Pub games & quizzes
- Parties
- Themed events
- And many, many more!
While we will always try to get your loved one outdoors for some fresh air. However, during the colder months, it isn’t always possible, so we make sure to have a range of fun and engaging activities indoors, such as chair exercises, games, and movie afternoons.
While we have staff on-site 24 hours a day, we don’t allocate any one member of staff to your loved one with dementia for the whole 24 hours. They will be left to their own devices at times during the day and during the night.
However, they will always have access to calling the staff and will frequently be checked in for a chat and to make sure they are eating and drinking enough.
We understand that those living with us feel the cold slightly more than we do, so we make sure to have the heating set to a comfortable temperature for everyone.
We make sure residents have enough blankets in their rooms and recommend cardigans and jumpers be brought in with them when they move in so that they can layer up.
We have all experienced a drop in drinking because of the cold weather, so we all know how it feels to not want to drink because it is cold.
It is imperative that we keep your loved one hydrated, even when cold.
We do this in several ways:
- Scheduled drinks rounds throughout the day
- Ensuring there is a drink with every meal
- Having a variety of drinks available in communal spaces
- Using brightly coloured cups to make drinks more visible
- Providing favourite drinks
- Adapting cups and glasses where needed
- Allowing glasses where safe
- Providing assistance where needed
- Using visual reminders
- Monitoring signs of dehydration
- Offering high water-content food
- Providing alternative fluid sources - milkshakes, smoothies, etc
- Ensuring staff are highly trained and communicative

Yes, you are welcome to use the communal areas, or if there is just one of you visiting, you can spend time in your loved ones' room.
There is an armchair for visitors in their personal room, so if you want privacy, there is space for guests there.
Should there be more of you, or you would like a bit more space, the communal facilities are always open, so you can choose to sit in either of our three dining rooms or three lounges.
We take several steps in our home to reduce the risk of colds and flu spreading throughout the home.
- We offer cold and flu vaccines to every resident in our home to boost their immunity.
- We recommend not visiting loved ones if you feel unwell.
- We have strict protocols in place if staff are ill.
- We have infection control measures to put in place should one of our residents contract a cold or flu to prevent it from spreading.
